Dragon Power! FF6 Dramatis Personae: Introduction
In the days of the Super
Nintendo,
there was no full-motion video, no voice acting -- and
three-dimensional rendering was still a distant dream. Games
in
those days had to rely on two-dimensional backdrops, a few sound
effects, music, written dialogue, and relatively small character
graphics with not much articulation. The medium's ability to
convey drama and character was still primitive in those days, but that
just worked more to spark players' imaginations regarding what was
really happening onscreen. Playing RPGs like the Final Fantasyseries
on the SNES was more like something between reading a book and watching
a silent
movie than the effects-laden, fully-voiced and motion-acted spectacles
we have today. Things like body language, facial
gestures,
and tone of voice were largely left up to the imagination, and in that
sense each player had his or her own sense of the characters -- and
formed their own personal experiences and bonds with them in a way that
can never be duplicated by today's more advanced technology.
Final Fantasy VI
was released on the SNES in 1994 (erroneously known as Final Fantasy III
back then), and it became an instant classic that will be remembered as
one of the greatest games of that entire generation. In my
opinion, it remains today one of the greatest installments of the
entire Final Fantasy
series, six games later. Having been rereleased on
the
Gameboy Advance recently, I've picked it up again and am currently
reliving the nostalgia of its story. Of course, this got me
wondering:
if Final Fantasy VI
were
first released today, with a more visually fleshed-out presentation,
what would
the characters be like? More specifically, I've wondered what
actors would play them if the game were to become a Hollywood movie
(perish the thought). So, the following is my take on whose
particular talents would best represent the game's characters, and why.
Those who remember them may not agree with me, but hopefully
will
at least get a kick out of it.
