The Western Triathlon Club
The University of Western Ontario Triathlon Club was established in 1992. A group of triathletes of abilities ranging from novice to elite national level athletes began by organizing a seminar on campus with the National Team coach. The goal was to provide an environment where athletes could learn training principles to complete their first triathlon, or improve their performances for National Level competitions. This was accompanied by an enjoyable, social, competitive and motivational atmosphere, which members could use to their advantage as serious or casual as it may be.
There were regular club swims at 6 am, runs and bikes a few times a week each, and multiple guest speakers. Topics included Sports Injuries, Basic Training Principles, and specifics on nutrition and bike technology. There were always socials, which frequently included much carbo-loading in many forms! The highlights of each season were the Inter-University Races across the Universities in Ontario. Queens is well known for its trail Duathlon in a farmers field full of smelly stuff and the party after. Hart House (at the University of Toronto) is known for its excellent short race indoor triathlon and the party afterwards. The Trent race has not existed every year, but it was always the University Race Series Championship, in the cold and snow. Western and Queens have always been the main rivals for the title and Westerners have won numerous times, claiming the title. This race was also known for how well it was organized, the draw prizes, and of course the party afterwards. It is said that one time, two Western Triathletes used their keys to etch UWO #1? into the brick pillar on the second floor of the Farmhouse Bar on the edge of town! According to the legend, many UWO athletes have suffered through return to town transportation - DENIED, thus increasing their base mileage 10km by having to walk back to Peterborough!
In conclusion, the UWO Triathlon Club has always, and always will, instill the values of enjoyment, consistency, camaraderie, and dedication to the sport in its members no matter what their goals are.
